about

The newest music from LA-based label, Smile Records is the debut album from The Daydream. It's pop sophistication in the vein of Canada's 1990s power pop sensations, Brown Eyed Susans. Band leader Tony Valenziano’s (lead vocals and 12 string guitar) own definition is the best description of the music: "It's not so power pop, but enough power to pop". The guitars of Steve Mercer and the bass lines of Steve Resnick, along with JJ Shapiro on drums, makes this band so fun to listen to, that you could easily be transcended to one of their live shows.

Tony say’s “There are so many tunes on this record that are influenced by the 60’s & 70’s with even some 80’s sounds you hate to admit you love” such as reminiscing of the Turtle-like happy-go-lucky sunshine harmonies comes with "Every Time I turn Around", but in spite of this title, the real "Monkee business" you'll experience through "Can’t Take Nothing With You" has us maybe questioning that.

More of the catchy sounds follow with the "Byrds-like" "Endlessly", sounding like if "Pet Sounds" met the Byrd’s "5th Dimension” recorded in the '70s. "Doin’ What You’re Doin’ Anyway" has enough hooks to catch on to the "Yacht Rock" contingent. The other side of the ocean is represented by the Todd Rundgren-like sophistication of "Laura" and "True Love Is Always Blind", with it's serene string arrangements leaving nothing but the beauty of the song itself, as well as "Everyone Is On to Me" and “I Wanna Go”, owing it's sound to the British 12-string sound, imagined with some extra harmonies and along with “Never Wanna Live Withoutcha” this offering from this new outfit making it one of the best hook-laden new releases of the year with one strong song after another.
